Here are some top tips that we advise clients to help reduce stress on their own.
These are just temporary methods that can be used, it is important though for long term results that the cause of the stress is discovered and resolved with an experienced practitioner.
So here are our top 7 tips to reduce stress naturally, enjoy!
Take a Nap
When life gets overwhelming, it zaps all of your energy and you feel like you can’t face the world anymore. This is the perfect time to take a quick nap. When I used to work for someone, I would literally go for a drive and find a nice view or tree to park under and have a power nap. Sometimes when you are stressed, it’s hard to get enough sleep at night, and this can accumulate and you can become even more stressed and bitter and cause serious health issues down the track.
This is a perfect way to catch up on that lost sleep.
There are 3 types of naps:
5 minute power nap (when pressed for time)
20 minute refresh – A bit longer, but brain function will be reset and it is not long enough to go into a deep sleep and wake up in a drowsy state.
Tips: I do what’s called a “Coffee Nap”, coffee takes about 20 minutes to kick in, so it will hit you when you wake up! Also, make sure you set your alarm to the nap that you want, so you don’t accidentally wake up in 4 hours and interrupt your sleep that night.
Pen to Paper
Sometimes we get stressed and overwhelmed because there are a million things running through our heads. This can lead us to thinking that there are a lot more things going on than there actually are, and it makes it hard to get things done when you are unable to be clear headed and focused. It’s easy to solve, all you do is grab a piece of paper, your diary or list in your phone and write down all the things that you need to do.
Tips: When I do this, I actually get surprised! It never seems to be as much as when it was running around my mind like a hurricane of ideas and problems I need to get to and sort out. This might sound nerdy, but one of the best feelings is getting things crossed off the list. It really boosts motivation to get the rest done and you can relax at the end of the day knowing that you got the important stuff done.
When some people hear the word meditation, sometimes they think of a hippy or some kind of eastern spiritual person who lives in a mountain. Believe it or not, this is becoming increasingly popular amongst companies for executives, and is not just for yoga loving hippies anymore. If you are a mum, business owner or anyone it is the best form of quick relief! So, this is what you do; sit somewhere quietly, take a few deep breaths in and out. Then start noticing your breath, really follow it as it goes through your nose and out of your mouth. Any noises that are around you, or thoughts that pass by, let them go by but don’t take notice of it and go back to your breath. Start with 2 minutes, then 5, then 10 and build it up slowly. That’s it! Easy right?
Tips: As a therapist running a busy centre this has been the best tool for me when it comes to getting stressed at times. Sometimes I get home from seeing clients and I’m buzzing with adrenaline and if I’m getting ready to go out and want to re-balance my mood I literally meditate in the free time I have and it makes such a difference and allows me to be present with my next appointment. If you are really struggling to switch off and you haven't done a meditation or guided meditation with a practitioner then a good start is a free meditation from Youtube. Here is an example of one you could use.
This is a really cool trick that I teach my clients.
Can you think of a really nice memory, maybe the last time that you felt really relaxed? Maybe it was a holiday, or spending time in a park with your family? Everyone has different experiences, and your memory is like a movie archive where you can bring back certain memories that can put you in a great mood instantly!
Tips: So just close your eyes, and relax. Breathe in and out. Whatever mood you are in, think of the feeling you would rather have like relaxed, happy or loved. Then think of the last time you really felt that, just close your eyes and your unconscious mind will present it for you. Now... when you bring that memory up make it as real as you can, like you were right there at that time again. See what you saw, hear the sounds and really feel the feelings that you had through your whole body.
Sometimes when we get too stressed or anxious we feel like withdrawing from the world.
Being around loved ones, fun friends and a friendly hug make a huge difference to have a break from the daily grind! Instead of talking to people about your problems, talk about the good things in life with them, listen well and you will see that you can gain a lot of knowledge and understanding from the people around you. Also, it doesn’t make you weak to seek help, it makes you smart for knowing that having some extra guidance during these times is a great way to get through the difficult times much faster.
Tips: If you have moved to a new city or want to increase your friendship circle, there are plenty of ways to meet people with websites like Meetup.com you can hang-out with people in your local area with similar interests. It gets you out and about and learning new things by stepping out of your normal comfort zone. You never know who you might meet, I get surprised all the time!
We are learning machines, when we were younger we always looked for new ideas and wanted to learn as much as we could through asking questions and being adventurous. Somehow when we become adults, it’s not so cool anymore to keep learning. From my own experience and people that I have met that are self-educating, beyond their job love learning more and more. Our brains love it, and it takes us away from being unconscious in front of the TV for hours a night. Imagine if you read inspiring or personal development books nearly every night instead of watching TV, how much more knowledge you would gain?
Tips Your time is precious, and if you want use it wisely I suggest things like listening to audio books more than news and music. It will give you confidence that you are growing yourself as a person, and you never know you may meet someone that would love to hear more about what you have learnt on various subjects.
This one is the most enjoyable! Laughing releases happy chemicals into your body, and is an instant reliever of stress. Hang out with friends that make you laugh, watch funny movies and stand-up shows. You can watch them instantly on your phone on YouTube and get a great belly laugh which will dissolve a lot of stress. Also when you laugh, the people around you are more relaxed and get a great vibe from you which will attract more fun into your life and take the issues a little less seriously.
Tips: Have you heard the phrase, laughter is the best medicine? When we hold onto negative emotions, stress or anxiety our body responds by feeling run down and tired. Eat nutritious food, not packaged food and you will notice the difference with your body and mind, as they are connected. When your skin glows, you are smiling and have energy the other challenges in life seem so much easier.
